Community is the heart of coworking. It’s a no-brainer, and yet fostering a thriving community is challenging and requires a lot of energy from the person(s) responsible for keeping the coworking space running smoothly.
On Tuesday April 12, 2016, Coshare offered the Creating your Community webinar featuring Jenny Poon of Co+Hoots, David Walker of OpenWork and Iris Kavanagh whom talked about several tips and trick to create real, thriving communities that foster the magic of coworking for your members.
The webinar is 43 minutes and you can watch it now!
Jenny Poon is a serial entrepreneur and founder of downtown Phoenix’s coworking space, CO+HOOTS that currently houses 200+ entrepreneurs. Her second business is eeko studio, a boutique design agency focused on fresh designs for impactful companies large and small. Her background in design and marketing led her to build a place where she could connect with like-minded folks that believe business growth comes from collaboration between different industries. She has worked over 10 years in team environments and has used her experience to organize a community that breeds inspiration and collaboration for entrepreneurs everywhere. Jenny earned azcentral.com’s top 35 Arizona entrepreneurs under 35 honors in 2009 and 2012; and Business Journal 40 under 40 honors in 2013.
David Walker brings seven years experience working in the coworking industry, having launched and led operations at <<Conjunctured, the first coworking space in Austin and one of the original coworking communities in the world. Conjunctured has received global acclaim, not only for being an innovative workspace alternative, but also for its unique community-first approach to work and thought leadership in the coworking industry. Walker graduated in 2006 with a Marketing degree from The McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas along with a concentration in Sociology. David’s mission is to help evolve outdated models of work into dynamic, ecosystems of collaboration.
Furthermore, he is the current Editor and publishing Partner of #FutureofWork Industry News, a digital media publication chronicling the ‘workplace evolution’ movement.
Iris Kavanagh became a member of a coworking space in January of 2009, got hooked on the magic and jumped behind the curtain to run the space, which proved to be an amazing experience. As the Chief Community Officer of NextSpace, Iris helped grow the company from an idea to nine locations, +1500 members and 36 employees. Her primary role was to communicate and instill the organization’s culture in each new location. Her guidance helped the staff develop vibrant communities, push the definition of collaboration, and convey the culture to visitors and prospective new employees. Along the way, Iris co-founded the two coworking industry associations, LExC and COSHARE, and co-developed industry specific events including leading the unconference at GCUC for two years. With 7 years of experience as a leader in the people centric shared workspace industry Iris now consults with owners and operators on operations, design, staffing and community building. She leads community manager mastermind groups and heads up the COSHARE board of directors. Her passion is helping people to work happier, which she believes is a result of working around great people, working with a purpose and working in a space that inspires a culture of collaboration and creativity.
